How many stitches do I cast on for a baby blanket if I’m using US 4 size needles and berry stitch.?

I want to make a baby blanket for a friend and after watching some videos on youtube, I am confident that I can do the stitch. What I would like to know, is what is an adequate amount of stitches, numbers please (approx). I want the blanket to be big enough to wrap the baby in and take him out in, and something she can lay out for the baby as well. Please help! Thanks!!!!

Since I am unfamiliar and could not find the berry stitch I am giving you a site with a lot of baby blankets and you can look at a few and get an average. The only thing is you have to know how the number of stitches that is in the stitch to figure the amount of stitches you will need.I just found the pattern for the berry stitch and it should help you figure you cast on. Email me if I can help you any further.

Make yourself a guage swatch. Cast on about 20 stitches or whatever you need to do about 5 or 6 berry stitches, and then knit about 20 to 25 rows. Measure how big that is, and that will tell you about how many stitches to cast on for your standard baby blanket (i think 20 inches by 30 inches)
